You're listening to the Mindset in Action podcast, bringing you the map to grow and streamline your business in 2023. I'm your host, dona Eade, your go-to gal for all things podcasting, planning and productivity and I'll be bringing you all that plus Mindset goodness from experts with knowledge to share. Let's make 2023 the year of success in your business. Welcome back to the podcast for this Monday mindset. This is going to be a mini series for November where I'm going to be hitting four different aspects of mindset that gets in our way and stops us from moving forward. Now I'm going to be specifically talking about how this affects the ability to start a podcast. But if you have not got a podcast in your future or you don't think you have, then listen anyway, because this can be applied to anything that you are not doing in your business that you think you should be doing. So in this first episode and these are only going to be short episodes, so make sure you hit subscribe where you listen so you don't miss the other three that are coming but in this episode we're going to be talking about overcoming the fear of judgment, so this can really hinder your podcast journey. Many potential podcasters worry what others are going to think of their podcast. Now, I have a slightly different view on this and I think this is more to do with ourselves, but we'll come back to that in a different episode.
Speaker 1:I want to talk today about the things that you think other people are going to be saying behind your back or maybe to your face, if they're that brave about your podcast. Now the thing is, as humans, we are innately looking for approval, generally speaking. Now there are some of you out there that we're like I don't need anybody's approval to do anything, and my goodness, you know, all power to you. But generally, we want to be liked, we want to be accepted, we want to feel like we belong, and that can really put fear in us when we are stepping outside of our comfort zone, stepping outside of the box that people have perhaps put us in, and making something new. And so for many people, when they think about podcasting whether they think it's an absolutely fantastic idea and they really, really want to do it, or whether they just think maybe it's the right thing for them one of the things that can really stop them dead in their tracks is thinking other people are going to be thinking who am I to do this, like what makes me so special that I could do a podcast. Who do I think I am and that's what we think other people are going to be thinking Now often, like I say, this isn't the case, but it is something that just paralyzes us and prevents us from starting.
Speaker 1:But what I want to say to you is that everybody has to start somewhere and criticism is part of the process. If you are brave enough to be putting yourself out on social media, then you are brave enough to start a podcast, because there are plenty of trolls out there on social media that are happy to tell you how useless you are or, you know, ask you who you think you are. And one of the people that I follow on social quite closely and have been in her world for probably 11 years now had an absolutely horrendous message sent to her in the DMs about somebody judging her parenting and judging her lifestyle, and I was just like who does that person think they are to do that? But the fact is, if you put yourself out there on social media, you are opening yourself up to this criticism. So if you're brave enough to put out a post on social media, you are brave enough to put a podcast episode out there.
Speaker 1:So when we are looking at overcoming this fear of judgment, let's start by focusing on the passion and the value you want to bring to your audience. You have a message that you want to share and you want to share it through the medium of podcasting. So stay authentic to yourself and remember that your podcast isn't going to resonate with everybody, and that is absolutely okay. I've said it before we do not need huge download numbers on your podcast. We just need the right people listening, and that comes from you being authentic to yourself, sharing the message that you want to share, and the right people will come to you. It may take time, it may take some stumbles, it may take some terrible outtakes, but you can get there and it can work for you.
Speaker 1:Seek constructive feedback from the people who you trust, not necessarily the people that you think love you and will say that you are brilliant at everything, because at the end of the day, there are people out there that are like that and will never fault anything you do. But go to the people that you know enjoy helping to push you forward and will share constructive feedback with you so that you can improve, because the only way to get better is to start. So embrace the growth and the learning when you're starting anything new, but especially if you are looking to do a podcast and that fear of judgment from others is sort of sitting there in the back of your head, because, at the end of the day, those people who are judging you are people that are probably not going to do it themselves and are probably just a little bit jealous that you have been brave enough to do something that they wouldn't dare. So don't let it get you down. Push past that fear, start your podcast, learn from your mistakes. You know, I started without an ounce of knowledge and I just kept pushing.
Speaker 1:And although I don't really want to go back and listen to episode one, two, three, four, probably through to about 20, I know that each time I do an episode I make small improvements that make each episode better and attract my audience closer to me, and those people who are supposed to hear it are definitely going to start hearing it. So that is episode one of this little mini series about podcasting mindset. I told you it was going to be short and they are all going to be short. Little sound bites for you, so make sure you hit the subscribe button where you listen. Come back on Thursday for the next episode of the regular format of podcasting and join me next Monday for the next in this mini series. Speak to you soon. Bye for now.
